My ancestor Uriah Bromwich and Jane Edwards (his wife) had in 1841 London census a young girl servant named Elizabeth Bullock. She was about 9 years of age. It said born in county which would be Middlesex then. In 1851 Uriah brought his family to the USA and along with them came servant Elizabeth Bullock age 21 years. Have you any idea of what family she was from? I know that there was a Bromwich that married a Bullock. And I have not been able to place young Elizabeth. But she had to grow up with the Bromwich children.

Although I can't find anything related to Elizabeth Bullock, I find the name Bromwich an interesting coincidence. The surname apparently can also be spelt as Bromage. However, it originates from place names such as Castle Bromwich and West Bromwich in the West Midlands/Staffordshire.
Many of my ancestors originate in the district of West Bromwich and there may be a link there. I have noticed that there are a few BROMWICH's and BROMAGE's married in West Bromwich District in the 1840's but not to a BULLOCK unfortunately.
It's a pity she was born before 1837 so the only records, if any, will be at the specific Parish where she was born. Normally servants would be some relation or a close neighbour. I assume that they moved to America before the 1851 census? Don't know if any of that gives you any ideas?

Chris,
I have to take you up on a point regarding service staff usually being neighbours. It is well know that servants could be found at fairs around the country and many were passed between employers. I agree that some would be from poorer families and then passed on to the more affluent but this is not always the case.
I do agree that the surname or Bromwich or its derivatives would suggest someone whose family at some stage in history came from one of those towns with the saxon name.
Deriviatives include Bromage, Bromwich, Bromige, Bromidge and Brommage
